Audiobook Review: Hardly a Gentleman by Eloisa James, Narrated by Mary Jane Wells

It's been a long while since I've reviewed a book. It's been an even longer time that I reread/relistened to a novel immediately upon finishing it--longer as in, well, never. I've never started a book over immediately after reaching "The End". Granted, I was distracted the first time around, although I did rewind in several instances to make sure I wasn't missing anything. By the time I'd reached the very satisfying ending, I was so delighted with the story that I couldn't resist treating myself to a prolonged experience of it. I was able to enjoy it more fully the second time and loved it every bit as much as the first. It will definitely be one of the books I return to.

Clara and Caelan are both loveable characters, especially Clara, and adorable together from the moment they meet. Their constant banter is fun and amusing, their love scenes steamy and true. While I detest unnecessary angst in a story, I don't mind a certain amount of snark. But Hardly a Gentleman is comical without it. I absolutely hooted with laughter at their first love scene--BOTH TIMES--which is certainly something new. That was when I fully realized how much fun I was having with the book--pure, relaxed enjoyment.

Mary Jane Wells is one of my favorite narrators. She makes everything sound fresh, natural, and her voices and accents are great. But I think this is my favorite of her narratives to date. She manages to bring to life every well-written word and situation, infusing the characters with warmth and emotion. Clara comes across as thoroughly sweet and ingenuous, which at times elevates the humor woven throughout the story to utter hilarity.

I love it! Having unknowingly started Eloisa James' Accidental Brides series with Book 2, I am eager to begin the first.

    Romance!

It's no secret that I prefer fat HEAs. Where better than in a beautiful romance?

    Mysteries -- Cozy Mysteries!

Fun, diverse, and clever, this genre also offers those satisfying endings I prefer. Moreover, they often include a romantic interest.  I absolutely love these books and have "discovered" many wonderful authors, books, and series to enjoy.

Since, like my favorite romances, cozy mysteries are feel good books with wonderful settings, characters, and satisfying endings, I will be featuring them now and then.

    Happy Reading!
